All visitors, including parents, who are helping in the classrooms, need to register at the office before going to the classrooms. This is a district policy intended to insure that we know who is on campus for the safety of our students.
Report Cards/Parent Conferences
Report cards are issued following the completion of each nine-week grading period.
Middle School will send home Mid-quarter grades only to those students who are performing unsatisfactorily. These notices must be signed and returned to school the next day.
Parent-Teacher Conferences are scheduled at the end of the First Quarter
with the Third Quarter conference optional. All parents are requested to
attend the first conference. Some parents are hesitant about participating
in conferences, but our teachers can do a better job with students if they can
share their understanding of the student directly with the parent. It is
not necessary to wait for the regular conference time if a parent has a special
concern. Parent conferences are encouraged and can be arranged at any
time during the school year. If you have any questions regarding your
child, please call the school office. A minimum-day schedule will be held
during Parent-Teacher Conference week
.
Parents can help their children by arranging a quiet, comfortable place for the students to work and by seeing that assignments are completed.
Students should be expected to spend four days a week an average of
- twenty (20) minutes on homework at the primary level
- an average of forty (40) minutes at the intermediate level
- 1-2 hours at the middle school level
The student must remember to return the work to school the following day. Class work not completed during the regular day will go home to be finished. This is not homework, but rather work that the student failed to complete during the normal school day.
If you have questions or concerns about unfinished class work then see your child's teacher.
It is very important to your child's education that he/she attends school on a regular basis. It is the student's responsibility to obtain the assignments missed during his absence.
However, when your child is absent please follow these procedures. Upon returning to school after an absence, a child must bring a note signed by his/her parents or guardian that states the date of, and reason for his/her absence. This note is presented to the teacher. Students are excused from school if they are ill, have a medical, dental or optometrist's appointment.
Attending funeral services of a member of his/her immediate family is also excused.
With few exceptions, all other absences are unexcused. Contact the office if you have questions regarding your child's absence.
A telephone call from the parent/guardian will be accepted (637-1258). It is important that you clear all absences with the school.
The School Board allows up to 15 days of absence per school year. Any more than 15 days of absence means non-promotion. A student can appeal to a school site committee for absence due to extenuating circumstances. He/she must submit a letter stating the reason for the absence(s) accompanied with medical documentation. Medical documentation must show that school attendance and/or independent study was unreasonable or impossible.
A student is allowed a maximum of 10 days due to suspension to graduate. These cannot be made up.
Prompt arrival at school is expected of all students. Late arrival disrupts class and causes loss of instruction time. Any student who arrives at school after 8:15 A.M. is considered tardy.
A child is not permitted to leave school or school grounds before regular dismissal without consent of the parent or guardian. Parents must check students out through the office in all cases of early departure.
The school nurse's office is located in the school office. The nurse is responsible for the maintenance of health records, routine health checks, care of minor injuries, and assistance in health teaching and vision/hearing screening. Please be sure to contact the nurse if your child has any unusual health problems. Please call the school nurse if your child is absent form school due to communicable disease. Precautions will be taken to protect other children.
If your child must bring medication to school, you MUST remember the following:
You may obtain a "Medication at School" form from the office this form can be used by the doctor and the parents. It must be used for long-term medication.
Other special services that are provided at Riverview School are:
A staff psychologist visits the school on a regular basis. He/she is available as special counselor to students and provides the teaching staff with different kinds of evaluation tools. The psychologist is also available to parents who have special concerns about their children.
District guidance staff is available to provide counseling services (individual and group) when behavioral or personal problems appear to be affecting a student's school performance or personal well-being. Requests for these services are arranged through contact with the school staff. Although parent/guardian written permission is required before such services are provided, guidance staff also may provide immediate counseling to students in crisis situations. In these cases, efforts will be made to inform parents of the services provided to their child as soon as possible and, if necessary, additional assistance will be provided.
A speech therapist visits the school on a regular basis. Students who are referred by their teachers may work with the therapist on a regular basis. Screening of primary grades will also be done. If any parent feels that their child may need help in the area of speech development they should contact their child's teacher to see about obtaining an evaluation from the therapist.
In case of illness or injury the school nurse or a member of the school staff will care for a student temporarily. School personnel will render first aid treatment only. In the event of an emergency, every attempt will be made to contact the parent(s) if a student requires immediate medical attention. The Emergency Card on file in the school office lists who contact in case of an emergency, as well as, important information regarding your child's health and physical conditions. Without accurate information we cannot provide the proper services in case of an emergency. School staff will follow the parent's directions as far as it is possible to do. PLEASE FILL THE EMERGENCY CARD COMPLETELY...IFTHERE IS A CHANGE OF ADDRESS, TELEPHONE, CONTACT PERSON, OR EMPLOYMENT...NOTIFYUS IMMEDIATELY SO THAT WE CAN CHANGE THE EMERGENCY CARD.
Change Of Address-Withdraw Form School
Please notify the office of any change in address or telephone number where we can reach the parents if there is an emergency.
Please notify the office when students are transferring out of Riverview School.
Student insurance is available at the beginning of each school year at a nominal cost. The insurance is made available through a private company and is not connected with the school. Purchase of the insurance is optional but highly encouraged.
State law requires a child to be five years of age before December 2to start Kindergarten and six years of age to start first grade.
If the child is not attended school before, it is mandatory that the parent brings a birth certificate for the child.
State law requires that all pupils must be immunized before entering school. The required immunizations are:
Verification of immunizations is only by written medical records. Students will be enrolled only with proof or immunization.
State law requires that all pupils are to have a health screening examination before entering first grade. This examination can be obtained from your family doctor or through services provided by the county health department. Verification of health screenings is by only written medical records. Pupils will be assigned to class with proof of having competed the health screenings.

All clothing found on the campus, regardless of its value, is placed in the lost and found box in the office. Money, jewelry, or any other articles of value are turned into the office. Students may claim them after proper identification. Unclaimed clothing will be donated to needy families.
It is the responsibility of the student to return all books from school in good condition. If a book is damaged or lost, the student is required to pay for replacing it.
All lunch money is paid in the school office. Students should pay in advance on Monday of each week. The school must account for meals eaten at the end of the week. Sending money in a sealed envelope with name, room number, and amount written on the envelope provides protection and assists the office.
Common sense and consideration are the best guide in determining whether to bring personal possessions to school. It is not appropriate for children to bring personal toys or games to school. The school provides appropriate equipment for PE and recreation.
The office phone is used for school business and we discourage its use by students. It helps if after-school arrangements are made before your child comes to school.
Students are not to loiter around the campus after school. All students should be away from school by 2:15 for Primary Grades and 3:15for all other grades. The only exceptions are those who have their teacher’s and parents' permission relating to co-curricular activities and/or after school help. Riverview School does not provide day care or baby-sitting services. It is the parent's responsibility to provide for after school supervision.
It is helpful to label all sweaters, jackets and personal items so that they may be identified and returned.
Once at school, all students are to remain on school grounds. If a student has an appointment, the student should bring a note from a parent and give it to the teacher. When a student is leaving school grounds the parent/guardian needs to sign out at the office.
Principal, teachers and instructional aides share the responsibility for monitoring the behavior and safety of students while on the school campus. Students are to respond obediently, courteously and quickly to adults doing this supervision.
Throughout the school year, students will occasionally be going on study trips. Signed parental permission is required for attending fieldtrips. Permission slips must be signed and returned to school personnel before the trip. All standard rules of conduct and procedures apply on such trips.
Parents are welcome and encouraged to visit their child's school at any time. Visits with teachers or other school personnel should be by appointment because this will assure that the persons or subjects you want to see are available when you come. For the safety and protection of students, all visitors must check in at the office before entering the classroom. This is a practice of courtesy and is required by state law.
The Student Council consists of a President, Vice-President, Secretary, and Treasurer plus Room Representatives from each of the fourth through eighth grade homerooms. Elections are held at the beginning of the first semester. Candidates circulate a petition, participate in a campaign assembly, and are voted on by their peers.
